New!!!!! Article in The Sunday Telegraph (UK) with Adam Lambert (of Queen + Adam Lambert):

"The Man Who Would Be Queen"

NOTE: Don't let the headline "The Young Pretender" throw you for a loop: It's all good!!! Here it relates to Adam's following in Freddie Mercury's footsteps as the iconic band Queen's vocalist/frontman...and NOT in a negative way....More as in the old French meaning "heir to the throne"...

Thank you once more GL for finding these interesting interviews for us. There was material there I've never heard discussed before....hard to believe!!!! ;-)

First of all, welcome back Urethra_Franklin! Great to see you back here again.

The article is very very good. The author did his homework and really delved into the whole Queen phenomenon. He seems to "get" Adam and understands the strong cohesion with Adam, Brian and Roger. Great to hear some new conversation from Adam, too. As more-than-capable as he is, it's evident that he still has doubts and struggles to "do it right," balancing the legacy of Freddie but giving the music his own spin. Sounds like the rehearsals are very collaborative and supportive all around.

I give Adam TONS of credit for having the guts and skills to take on this job in the face of lots of criticism, esp. at first.
He is standing up to it with such grace and respect.

Thank you Dr. May and Roger and of course AFL

Love the article.

Excellent in depth article/interview. I really enjoyed reading it and learning Adam's thoughts and feelings about fronting Queen. Kudos to Adam for his courage although his talent, charisma and charm have proven what we, his diehard fans, knew he could do all along.....he is our GFG <3333

Thank you for posting Glitzylady!

I'm almost overcome with emotion now that I read some very honest words expressed by Adam, Brian, and the author. Great article!

A GLambert in the UK is mailing me a copy to San Francisco <3

LAMBERTLUST, how lucky you are! Very cool. You'll be able to treasure your own copy. :)

This interview is soooo so good!!
Adam's answers were simply brilliant and they openly revealed his amazing personality, infectious humor and remarkable humility. His connection to the audience..... As a fan, himself. So very well said. Roger and Brian were very clever and beautifully transparent. One can feel in their answers and quips the renewed spark and energy they've been infused with in these last months touring as a successful team with Adam.

There was more revelation in this interview - by Adam certainly, he seemed to really open his heart and let us in even more on his thoughts and feelings in all this, and by Roger and Brian as well.

Such a delightful read. A real keeper if one can get their hands on a copy. I have a digital one saved in my photos now, at least, thanks to Glitzylady and this blog. :)))))

Thank you Glitzy for the wonderful way you laid out that post! Really appreciate it very much.

Regarding the "Young Pretender" bit, I was a little bit irritated at first, but then I thought - if it makes more people read that article, which it just might, I'm good! Happily the article is awesome (AND DESERVING AND TRUE!) :)

The author really puts his finger on why adam did not succeed as a pop star, that his music was just not good enough. Sad to see that adam doesn't seem to understand that. His comments about being cool and likeable just totally miss the mark.

Anonymous said...

Only Adam can answer why he chooses this path in music. Regardless, his songs are great and it's still moved to the top of the CHART!!:)

I'm so proud of him sticking what he believe is right for him!!:) He is not perfect but he listens to his guts!!:) QUEEN+ADAM LAMBERT is the bomb right now!!:)

In addition to being a successful and very talented songwriter and performer (domestic and international millions of music buyers agree. The numbers don't lie).... I think Adam has developed a remarkable grasp on the music market and being marketable in a fickle genre such as pop. He possesses a well-rounded understanding. His comments related to cult of personality (vs just the merits of good music and singing alone) .... likeability... Being considered "cool" .... particularly as it relates to obtaining "megastardom" ... Are exactly on point.

Research, experience, history, record producers and executives, music buyers, and successful major artists have indicated as such, commented the same and would appear to agree with him.

Anonymous said...

Oh yada you seem quite the expert. Haha

To break thru in pop you need a great song that catches on. People like Ed sheeran or sam smith aren't that cool. They are ugly as hell but they have music people can relate to. Ariana grande may be cool but she is also repeatedly trashed as the biggest bitch around, so not real likeable.

Adam turned off a shit ton of people who wanted to support him after idol with his ama antics but he got another chance with trespassing. That album failed because it just wasn't good enough. The end

yada said...

The music industry and buyers would consider themselves to be the experts. And based upon many of their representatives, stated opinions, and buyer accounts.... they would appear to agree with Adam.

yada said...

..... As for me, back to the appreciation of this outstanding article, it's featured artist more than worthy of its acclaim, and the fun and positivity of this blog. :))

Yada

Oh I see. Good to know. Haha

Well then adam really has no chance with another album so he shouldn't be wasting his time.

Niiiiice article, loved it!!!

Dee R Gee said...

I think Adam makes an excellent point when he says that fans not only buy the music, but they also "buy into" the singers whom they like for reasons beyond the music. This is where the singer's persona and personality come into it. A singer can have great music, but if the buying public doesn't know him/her or like him/her they won't buy it.
Adam is working to gather fans who like him and his music. Hopefully it will pay off with A3. I think both Adam's albums contained quality music written by some top composers, along with Adam's own input. There were some potential hits on TP which never saw the light of day. They are "plenty good enough."

Anonymous said...

12:47 what? Not giving credit for trying anymore?

Anonymous said...

The "good enough music" claim by you know who up thread is contrary to his/her own point, too bad her/she doesn't even get that. lol. I will give that poster one thing 'though, in my very humble opinion, it is very much about, in Top 40 & Pop, the one catchy single that "hits". But it so much more complicated than even that (obviously). Ed Sheeran made it big in large part because of the catching on and wild success of the single "The A Team", BUT, as I came to discover, Ed Sheeran is truly crazy talented (& yes, he is perhaps not traditionally cute and adorable by teeny bopper standards, but his talent and perseverance has transcended that sometimes necessary component to pop stardom, and that is awesome I think!). Ariana Grande's rise to super stardom has LARGELY to do with a huge "Disney-esque" following from a widely watched teeny bopper show, she had a built in audience and promoters knew it! However, in all fairness, the girl's got some true talent and a good work ethic, from what I read. Anyway, nobody is reading this comment by now probably, lol, but to simplify Adam's, or anyone's mainstream success or lack thereof is just foolish... it is too complex for silly, base proclamations... just ask Pharrell!

Anonymous said...

It was the author of the article, a well known music critic, that said adam didn't become the star he was predicted to become because his solo music was not good enough. That was his opinion. Not because adam was gay, or not cool or unlikeable. Becuase he didn't have the music.

And frankly that's been obvious to anyone paying attention.

Dee R Gee said...

2:27, I'm still here! Lots of songs make it to the top, not because they're all that great or creative or new-sounding. Or not even because they're sung that well. A song, regardless of its quality must be "marketed" to become "marketable." Lots of songs that make to the top sound pretty much like a lot of other songs. But the songs at the top are played a lot, are heard a lot and get ingrained in people's minds.

This is not to say that all songs that make it to the top are lousy. Of course not. There are big hits that are very good songs, both musically and vocally. But that is not always the case. Adam have lots of loyal fans, but he has to become "cool" to like by a lot more people. Then people will buy his music. His Queen partnership is helping this issue a lot. He wants more than anyone to succeed on his own merits with his own music.

As Adam once said, "It's not always about the voice."

yada said...

Exactly, Dee R Gee... Agreed. Great clarity & excellent points. :)

Anonymous said...

Well people have known who adam is for six years now. Nothing is going to make him cool at this point, certainly not singing songs from the 70s, When you come off idol you have one big shot and if you blow it then thats that.

Adam can make money the same as Taylor hicks and clay aiken and other idols do but he will never be a pop star or get his songs back on radio.

Isn't it amusing and a bit sad.... how a person hasn't much to do other than to go on an artist's fan site and bash the artist to his fans? I'm not sure what the motive is... but it certainly isn't good, and this person's fun is at our expense.

Anonymous said...

Isn't it amusing and a bit sad that adams fans can't handle intelligent discussion? That they read an article about him and ignore what the article says?

Hmm, anon 3:40. Interesting. Perhaps your statement only emphasizes why certain people who seem bored enough with their day, who seem to struggle with Adam's successes, and who come here to stir up trouble and start silliness... would be wise to heed your statement and not ignore 99.99% of this article.

The acclaim & praise of this article is overwhelming. The fans commenting on this thread are wise and intelligent enough to read the entire article, comment on it and not be focused on only one sentence point. There have been plenty of balanced (and respectful) discussions about Adam's marketability among us. Clearly, that is not your intent.

There. I'm done.

Hope you're having a wonderful evening. :)

@Dee R Gee 3:08

2:27 here. I must not have written my post very well, because it was actually directed at January 11, 2015 at 11:58 AM, who I suspect might also be January 11, 2015 at 12:38 PM (who has probably authored another post or two on this thread as well) - very sorry Dee R Gee that I wasn't clear.

I think the music on Trespassing was excellent, and actually, I am the author of a post on a thread a day or so ago about how Trespassing was perhaps released about 6 months too early, because shortly thereafter Pharell and Daft Punk did very well, etc. (btw, this is not an original thought, I have seen several industry people talk about this in regard to Adam's Trespassing album).

Anyway, I didn't do a good job of my 2:27 post, I can tell from your response, so my apologies. I was trying to say that Ed Sheeran was not ur average teeny bopper magnet, as Adam is not, and he did well by perseverance and innate talent, but also because of that one single that "hit", The A Team & the good luck to then be picked up to Tour with Taylor Swift on her RED tour. And then I was trying to say that Ariana Grande had the huge support of producers and promoters who were smart enough to capitalize on her built in teeny bopper audience from her TV show, so she was almost a sure thing, but there again, a hit single, or two, solidified that). I truly believe that one mega hit single does a lot for a person's career... and yes, the "ear wormy" effect of it being constantly played on Top 40 radio is key, absolutely key, imho. I was trying to make a case for Adam's Era 3 success potential, not against. (btw, I agree with others here that Adele and Sam Smith's music is hugely relatable by various demographics, THAT HELPS for sure, as has been said here in this thread... that "torchy song" stuff is almost always going to do well, I think about that a lot actually, in regard to Adam's next single release). Anyway, blah blah, but Dee R Gee, I like what you had to say, as I like what most posters in this thread did... I was just trying to say that it is hardly an easy, one-liner business when taking the business of who will be a pop star or not... and again I'd say, just ask Pharrell... or Ed Sheeran. I think Adam is very capable of still achieving radio play and pop recognition. Maybe he won't be Harry Styles and One Diretion... but Harry Styles won't be Harry Styles and One Direction soon enough, ya know what I mean. There will always be a 5 Seconds of Summer to come along and give the recent Boy Band flavor of the month a run for it's money and capture the tween crowd... but good music, like Adam's, will find a home, and I truly believe it won't be in a Vegas Lounge. Just my POV... I am not in the industry, don't really know.

Anonymous said...

The praise seems to be coming from a couple of old guys trying to sell tickets for their tour. People who can't see that are a bit clueless.

Get your beauty sleep girlfriend! You gonna need your strength for the trying times ahead. :)

Gabi said...

I deleted my comment. I read through it again and felt like it sounded too harsh coming from a fan. I love Adam. I hope he realizes by now how good he is and where his real strength lies. He can connect easily. I'm glad he has incredible mentors in Brian and Roger.

Dee R Gee said...

4:40, hello again. Thanks for your good response to my post. I wasn't really disagreeing with you at all. I understood where you were coming from. I kind of went off in my own direction on the topic. I know that after this current Queen tour is over, the tension and anticipation will rise dramatically about A3. Adam's ability to market and sell his own music is key to his success. No on can deny that. I just think that some people (not you) think that his shot at a big hit is over because he really hasn't had one. WWFM was a strong song, but not a "mega-hit" IMO. I think he has tried to keep himself visible these last few years, kept his name out there. Will the QAL experience hurt him in the long run? Will it detract from him as a solo artist? I don't think so. It has brought awareness to millions of new fans who should now give him a try with his own music.

So often it is said, but it so true. It just takes that one magic song. The song might not even be that great, but somehow it gets heard, gets played and gets into people's head. That's how lots of singers, some far less gifted than Adam, get to the top. That magic song that everyone loves. It's out there for Adam, just waiting to be heard. No one wants it more than he does. He's not going to stop working at it. And he has millions of fans supporting him.

No way do I see him as a Vega lounge act.

@3:40 (who is also clearly the writer of many other posts here), I don't think that some of the fans here are being close-minded to the article, or the huge difficulties Adam faces in achieving Album 3 success and radio play - to the contrary, I think you seem rather tunnel visioned in your views and your position. Let me ask you, are you in the music industry, or the PR business, or in A&R, or anything of that ilk? I am a keen observer of Pop Culture and the music business, nothing more - are you something more than that? I am not being cheeky, I'd really like to know. I do actually get what you are saying in a lot of your posts here dude... but to me you are the one being awfully sure of yourself and your view, not the other fans here. Pitbull, with his age & his looks & his limited vocal range probably didn't think he'd become Mr. Worldwide either, not tot he scale that he did, so one never knows do they my friend? I get it, Pitbull was "on-trend" with is actual music 'though, and his collaborations, is that what you'll reply to me? Maybe, but there was also a time where Ceelo and Pitbull and Pharrell were probably not forecast to be the huge CROSSOVER success stories that they were, but one never knows!

3:25, If Adam is not up to your standards, I suppose you can follow the singers who are at the top of the charts. It is always sunny and light at the top. If you are a real Adam fan, I would think that positivity is more helpful than negativity. Being positive is not the same as being unrealistic. Hope your prediction does not come to pass and that Adam will have a strong solo career. I hope that you hope the same thing for him.

5:07 the troll on here repeats himself so much ,the Clay,Hicks old guy selling ticket thing is getting old. I hope I did a good job raising my children and none will turn out as miserable or hateful as him, I kind of feel bad for him I don't know why. Lonely, bored , sick who knows.

Dee R Gee said...

You're probably right
I just couldn't resist. I feel sorry for trolls who don't seem to a positive passion in their lives.

I liked reading Adam's responses in the article. Does anyone else fear that he's not going to show his vocal range now because it's not all about hitting the high notes in pop music?? Adam's voice is a big part of what sets him apart from other mediocre singers. Well...that and his ULTRA sexiness. If he were just a "good" singer, there's no way Queen would've collaborated with him.

Anonymous said...

I have a feeling that Adam will try to set himself apart from the other pop stars with a different sound. His voice is so malleable and he can blend genres so well. So, my guess is that it'll be a different sound that would become signature Adam. I loved Shady the 1st time I heard it and that sexy base vibe but sadly, it was never released as a single. I think that it would have been the "new sound" that would have gotten him noticed again. Can't wait for his A3 to surprise us all.

Trespassing WAS and IS good enough ..... supremely good enough. It went to no 1 in the US and platinum in both Australia and New Zealand. It may not have been good enough for you but there's no accounting for taste, and don't speak for the rest of us who adore BOTH albums.

Anonymous said...

I buy albums based on the singer's voice and the singer's songs, NOT on his or her personality - that's ridiculous.

LAMBERT Outlaw said...

There are so many things I want to say but I can't put them in coherent sentences. So I'll just say that this article was good in it's entirety but ... I TOTALLY 'disagree' with the author saying that ADAM's songs on Trespassing just weren't good songs. After the worldwide acclaim it received how could he make a statement like that? Not good songs on an album do not put an album at the top of the charts even for only one week!! NO exposure ... no radio play, TV appearances, advertising, playing the songs in stores, malls, etc. ... just plain ignoring the album by his record company ... THAT'S!!! why ADAM's second album wasn't successful!! The songs were good, very good but NO one heard them except the fans & if it weren't for the fans buying the album it might not have even had the success it did have. RCA did ADAM wrong & I hope they have come to realize it but I doubt it.
As for the 'troll' on this thread ... he sounds very much like the one that chased all the fans on the Amazon fan site away. Hope the darn fool hasn't found another site to ANTAGONIZE!!

I don't buy music because an artist is "cool" or he/she has the biggest range or the highest range, and the singer doesn't need to have the best voice ever. I buy albums because I love the songs on the albums period.

Contrived. OK then.

Great article!

Adam is a sexy Kool Kat BUT I wouldn't buy his music unless I actually liked it .... and I do .... I love it!!

Anonymous said...

OK - So, English isn't my native tongue and I've read the article, slowly and carefully, 4 times. Where did the author say that Adam's songs are not good enough? Hopefully someone can help me out here because I appear to be missing out or misunderstanding the article. I thought that it was very positive and the author gave his own opinion why he thinks that Adam is not yet the superstar that everyone thinks he should be.

Such a great read - so many other things we could have/should have discussed, commented, enjoyed...

Well, I'm too late for the party anyway, so I'll just say this:
Imo Adam is in so many ways too special, too beyond the regular chart toppers...His VOICE and his talent to use that voice would be so wasted on those "ear worms" played over and over and over...

Of course I hope Adam gets what he wants (wish he would give us "an update" what are his hopes and wants for A3?) and I wish him all the success he so deserves - just don't think the mainstream US will ever "get" Adam!
